As part of St. Matthew’s summer focus on AN ALTAR IN THE WORLD by Barbara Brown

Taylor, Lyn Fraser and Reenie Neal will lead a two-session discussion group on “Vocation as

Spiritual Practice.” The word “vocation” first appeared in the English language in the 1400s,

when it meant “a summons from God to perform a particular task or function in life.” Our

discussions will explore the idea of “vocation” as outlined in Chapter 4, “The Practice of Living

with Purpose.” What is God calling us to do in this world? Although you do not have to read the

chapter in order to participate, Barbara Brown Taylor’s writing about the topic is excellent and

highly recommended.
